READS ENGINE HOURS. On Mercury SmartCraft outboards (PCM-555 / ECM-555, 2001 and up) and on MerCruiser EFI/MPI engines it displays total engine operating hours — which cannot be cleared or reset — plus hours accumulated in each RPM band. That histogram tells you how hard an engine was actually run, not just how long, which is the number that matters when you are buying a used boat. Carbureted engines do not record hours at all: that requires an ECM or PCM, so EFI/MPI only.
